Racial Gerrymandering
It’s been brought up in The Economist and other magazines that the state laws requiring majority black voting districts (in order to protect them from being diluted and taking away the african-american’s voice) don’t work. While I’m not going to comment on that side of the debate, one thing that occured to me today is that they do limit the area in which African-Americans can live and expect political representation. This in turn further ensures seperation of the classes or races and it is the later that is perhaps more responsible for problems attributed to race in the U.S. than to any other factor I can think of.
