Submarine Records Sao Paolo

Once upon a time I went to the Empty Bottle and watched some probably legendary free-jazz saxophonist shred everything. It was really amazing. I was bobbing up and down in my seat, he killed. Then Jeff Parker came on and everything got really boring. Derek Bailey-isms flowed like vinegar, but with out that tension that Baily can make in his songs. In essence I was seeing what’s wrong with Chicago post-rock: it’s to self important. Tortoise tries to escape their own idenity wwith each record, but much like their fine city, the whole effect is smart but under-whelming. Hence my initial reactions to Submarine Records from Sao Paolo were actually kinda negative. The clips I heard of Hurtmold just sounded like Tortoise, but finally went to their website today and have to say M. Takra has some bad ass hooks. Hurtmold just makes the good old “post”-rock and roll with a few flourishes of pop-ness and Dischord slash burn that Tortoise could desparelty use, and The Eternals (who I beleive are American) sound like a 70s british art pop project ala Eno’s Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy or Robert Wyatt. Submarine is probably what Chicago’s rather boring sound could use: vitality.
